After defending his national title, Tassie DJ Max Best will again battle it out at the world championships – and he believes this time he can go all the way.

Fresh off being crowned Australia’s best DJ for the second year running, Tasmania’s Max Best says he is feeling “extremely prepared” as he gears up to compete in the DMC World Championships in Paris.

Best came fourth in the global competition in 2023 – held in San Francisco – and won the people’s choice award. But he’s hoping to go all the way this time around, having meticulously crafted his set for six months.

He said he was honoured to have the opportunity to battle it out on the world stage once more.

“It feels like it wasn’t a fluke the first time,” he said.

Best described the set he planned to perform as “pushing a very new school style”.

“I had a lot of success with this new style last year and I’m kind of doubling down on that and hoping it’s just as effective,” he said.

“Each competitor just gets six minutes and it’s about being as technical [as possible] and innovating the art form of DJing and trying to fit in as much as possible. So within that six minutes, there’s seven or eight tempo changes and lots of different songs.”

The DMC World Title is considered the most prestigious accolade in DJing and whoever is crowned the best turntablist takes home the iconic DMC World Champion jacket.

In order to qualify for the finals, Best will need to make it through an elimination round upon his arrival in Paris. If he makes the cut, he’ll vie for glory against eight of the world’s best DJs next Saturday.

“I’m feeling very confident that I’ll make it through [to the finals],” he said.
