Brendan “Squizzy” Taylor is back selling his crayfish off Margate jetty, saying he plans to keep the tradition going to “give back to locals”.

Locals can bag an Easter deal, with what Mr Taylor said were “the cheapest crays in Australia” available straight off the boat from 3pm on Wednesday.

Mr Taylor said he will keep selling cheap crayfish to Tasmanians at Margate each Easter and Christmas as a way to thank them for their ongoing support.

“I could sell them all for a couple of dollars more a kilo and be at home right now, but it’s not about that,” Mr Taylor said.

“For me it is about connecting with people. We care. We care about the environment. We care about the industry, we care about Tasmania.

“One of the best parts is people can ask me where I caught it, or the best way to cook it.”

The industry was left reeling in 2020 when China imposed severe restrictions to crayfish exports with 90 per cent of Australia’s lobster exports previously going to the country.

Mr Taylor said it was the support of Tasmanians buying local that kept them afloat.

“It’s about saying thank you, it’s good for Tasmania and it’s good for the industry,” he said.

After appearing on TV show Aussie Lobster Men, “Squizzy” Taylor’s popularity has boomed, particularly overseas.

Mr Taylor said he gets requests to send crayfish as far as Scotland, Ireland and Germany.

“It’s a nice compliment, I know people travel a long way to see me. I’ve had people drive down from Launceston and Devonport for cheap crays,” Mr Taylor said.

The Easter catch of more than 420 crayfish are to be sold at $80 a kilo, with a single cray starting from $49.

Mr Taylor said he was expecting to sell out quickly.

“I’ve seen the line all the way to the end of the jetty,” he said.

“We will start from 3pm and keep going until we sell out.”
