Snow is expected to reach about 500 metres above sea level in parts of the state this weekend, with temperatures set to plummet as a cold front moves over Tasmania.
Peaks such as Mount Field and the Hartz Mountains are tipped to receive the most snow, while kunanyi/Mount Wellington and Ben Lomond are also likely to see some flurries.
A cold front is forecast to move over the state late on Friday afternoon and during the evening, bringing with it shower activity.
Ellie Mathews of the Bureau of Meteorology said this would result in “significantly colder air” and the potential for snow showers, particularly in the West and South-West of the state.
“Once that front does move through, we do also see that colder air linger, particularly into Sunday and even Monday, as we get a high pressure ridge move over us quite quickly,” the meteorologist said.
“So whilst we might be talking snow on Saturday, as we head into the early hours of Sunday morning, when we see the winds becoming much lighter, we are looking at widespread frost across the state into Sunday morning and even Monday.”
Ms Mathews said the maximum temperature in Hobart on Saturday was likely to be as low as 11 degrees, before rising to 13 degrees on Sunday.
Minimum temperatures, meanwhile, are forecast to plunge to 2-3 degrees on Sunday morning.
“If you are even that slight little bit inland, we could see patchy to widespread frost through parts of the South-East on Sunday,” Ms Mathews said.
Weather alerts for bushwalkers are likely to be issued for the Western and Central Plateau districts this weekend, as well as statewide frost warnings.
