The SES is warning Tasmanians to prepare for potentially heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding and damaging winds forecast across much of the state.
SES A/Assistant Director, Cheryl Ames said: “There is a significant weather system crossing the state today and tomorrow, and we are advising everyone to be prepared and stay informed of the conditions.
“The weather system is expected to bring heavy rain in the North and East of the state from later today with the heaviest rainfall of between 60 and 100mm possible in areas north of Swansea and over 150mm possible in Gray and St Marys.
“The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Severe Weather Warning for heavy rain that may lead to flash flooding.
“Thunderstorms may also develop with the rain bringing a slight risk of isolated heavier rainfall in parts of Eastern Tasmania.
“A Riverine Flood Watch has also been issued for many Tasmanian catchments with minor to moderate flooding possible.”
The weather bureau has also issued a Severe Weather Warning for damaging easterly winds with gusts between 70-90km/h possible along the Northern, Eastern and South Eastern Tasmanian coasts, as well as on Flinders Island from late Saturday and into Sunday.
Ms Ames said the rain and winds were expected to ease on Sunday morning with more settled weather expected next week.
“If you have to drive during the next couple of days, please remember advice from Tasmania Police to be safe on the roads, slow down, put your headlights on, and never drive through flood water on the roads,” she said.
The State Emergency Service advises people to supervise children closely, check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings, manage pets and livestock and secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
Power outages can be reported to TasNetworks on 132 004.
