Tasmania Police are investigating a late-night car crash on Tuesday that has reportedly left two pedestrians in hospital with serious injuries.
Police and emergency services were called to Hobart Road about 11pm after receiving reports a gold Holden Captiva had lost control and left the road, crashing through a fence of a residence where two pedestrians were walking at the time.
The male, 31 and female, 32, were allegedly struck by the vehicle and were transported to the Launceston General Hospital with serious injuries.
Crash investigators attended the scene where police say the driver of the vehicle was not located, later tracked to a South Launceston address.
The 23-year-old South Launceston woman was taken into custody for mandatory blood testing and her car seized as part of the investigation.
Acting Inspector Martin Parker on Wednesday said the investigation remains ongoing, with no charges laid or suspects taken into custody.
“The driver was released from custody while investigations continue,” he said.
“We are very early in our investigations and don’t know what caused the crash.”
Acting Inspector Parker said police believed the driver and pedestrians were not known to each other.
He also confirmed that the blood test was “standard procedure” in crashes where injuries are obtained.
“We would like to remind everyone to drive with caution, be mindful of their speed, pay attention to the road and people moving around the road,” Acting Inspector Parker said.
Anyone with information about the crash, or dashcam footage, should contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.
