A Devonport man has faced court over the alleged trafficking of 181 abalone.

Thu Thanh Nguyen was directed to make a plea on the charge of trafficking in abalone after the case was adjourned in the Devonport Magistrates court on Wednesday.

Court documents show the charge was brought against Mr Nguyen by the Marine and Rescue division of the Tasmanian Police relating to the alleged trafficking of 181 abalone.

Wild caught abalone can sell for $150-200 per kilo and each abalone can grow to over one kilogram, meaning the catch could be worth more than $27,000.

The matter was adjourned due to a delay in disclosure, which the Crown Prosecution appearing by phone said had all been provided to Mr Nguyen’s counsel.

Mr Nguyen was directed to enter a plea when the matter returns to court on September 2.
