Male motorcyclist has died in the south after police tried to intercept him

A 21-year-old motorcyclist from Margate has died in a crash on Hobart’s eastern shore on Saturday morning after police had earlier tried to intercept him.

A police professional standards investigation will be held into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash which happened about 12.30am near the Warrane overpass on the Tasman Highway.

Commander Jason Elmer said police attempted to intercept a motorcycle for a standard vehicle check, in the vicinity of the Mornington roundabout on the South Arm Highway.

“The motorcycle accelerated away from police, and police immediately disengaged and made no further attempt to intercept the motorcycle,” he said.

“The motorcycle has then continued along Tasman Highway at considerable speed, and shortly after collided with the centrewire divider of the Tasman Highway, just passed the Warrane overpass.

“A member of the public heard the crash and called emergency services, and police and paramedics attended the scene.”

The motorcyclist died at the scene.

Commander Elmer said it was standard protocol part for Tasmania Police Professional Standards to review the incident.

“Our thoughts are with the young man’s family and loved ones.

“This is a tragic occurrence. Any death on our roads affects a wide range of the Tasmanian community, from the family and friends of the person involved, to emergency services workers who attend scenes like this one.”

Anyone who saw a black Suzuki motorcycle in the vicinity of the South Arm Highway or Tasman Highway is asked to contact police.
