A man was winched to safety from the Derwent River after he was seen clinging to his kayak on Thursday night.

Police received reports of the man in the river between Old Beach and Claremont, appearing to be in distress just before 8pm.

The man was reportedly in the water, wearing a flotation device and holding onto the hull of a kayak.

Police attended and watched the man from the shoreline while the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched.
