The head of Unions Tasmania, Jessica Munday, has been overlooked in her bid to replace Anne Urquhart in the Senate with the ALP’s national executive instead choosing another union official.

Josh Dolega, a union organiser with the Community and Public Sector Union, was chosen from a field of seven people who nominated for the coveted position.

Labor sources who contacted the Mercury said many were stunned at Mr Dolega’s selection.

“The party is in shock,” one Labor insider said.

“Most party members don’t know who he is.

“It is odd the unions did not back her.”

A supporter of Ms Munday, who could not be contacted for comment, said a democratic process would have ensured she was chosen to replace Ms Urquhart who resigned to successfully contest the seat of Braddon at the May 3 election.

“On merit Jess would have won hands down,” one member said.

“It is absolutely ridiculous that someone so talented, who is a proven campaigner and fights for workers every single day, did not get the nod,

“We’re not the royal family, there should have been a proper process to select Anne’s replacement.”

Mr Dolega won in a field that is believed to have included former federal Labor Braddon candidate Chris Lynch, Meander Valley councillor Ben Dudman and head of the teachers’ union David Genford.

It is understood he had the backing of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, once headed by Ms Urquhart.

Mr Dolega’s nomination is expected to be ratified by a joint sitting of both houses of the Tasmanian parliament on Tuesday.

He will serve the remaining three years of Ms Urquhart’s term on an annual salary of $233,600 plus allowances.
