Hobart dad David Luke Denehey pleads not guilty to child abuse material, reporting charges

A Hobart father will take allegations that he accessed child abuse online, and failed to adhere to his reporting obligations before a jury, after announcing he will fight the charges. What happened in court.

A Hobart father will take allegations that he accessed child abuse online, and failed to adhere to his reporting obligations before a jury, after announcing he will fight the charges.

David Luke Denehey appeared in the dock of Hobart Magistrate Court where his lawyer, Fabiano Cangelosi told the court that some charges would be withdrawn by the DPP.

A single count each of possessing child abuse material accessed using a carriage service, and failing to comply with reporting obligations were withdrawn.

Mr Cangelosi asked Magistrate Jackie Hartnett to accept pleas of not guilty to Denehey’s remaining five charges.

Denehey pleaded not guilty to charges of using a carriage service for child abuse material, possess child abuse material obtained or accessed using a carriage service, and three counts of failing to comply with reporting obligations.

Each of the alleged offences occurred in South Hobart.

It is alleged the use carriage service for child abuse material charge occurred between January 23 and April 25 this year.

The possessing child abuse material count is alleged to have happened on April 26 this year.

Two of the three counts of failing to comply with reporting obligations are alleged to have happened on January 30 and February 23, 2023 – while one count happened on June 22, last year.

In court, Mr Cangelosi asked that Denehey be committed to the Supreme Court of Tasmania for trial on counts one and two – which are the using carriage service for child abuse material and possession of child abuse material charges.

The remaining three are not indictable charges.

Denehey was remanded in custody and will appear in Supreme Court in mid October via videolink.
