Hobart brewery Captain Bligh’s new vegemite beer to turn heads at national festival

Vegemite and beer are two words many would oppose to hearing together.

But Captain Bligh’s had other thoughts.

The family-run Hobart brewery is preparing to debut its limited edition Vegemite beer for the Great Australian Beer Spectacular (GABS) this weekend.

“My inspiration was Vegemite on toast, particularly Vegemite on toast when you’ve had a hangover and you just need something to eat first thing in the morning,” Captain Bligh’s owner Steve Brooks said.

“And there’s nothing better than that toasty, buttery smell.”

The process of achieving those toasty buttery flavours was simple, Mr Brooks said, involving just a few tweaks to bring out the “buttery flavours” and the use of different grains to achieve the “toasty” element.

“I held out very little hope for this beer as something what would be enjoyable,” he said.

“But we were actually really surprised.

“It doesn’t have that big slather of Vegemite quality to it.”

Now in its 15th year, GABS is known for featuring “interesting, outrageous, exclusive beers”, Mr Brooks said, with his business previously entering an older style wheat beer.

While only accepting about eight kegs, Mr Brooks assured there would still be some left for locals to get a taste of the creation at their monthly tasting on Friday, April 11.

They will also release their second whiskey and third rum product on the night.
