Huon Valley mist is proving to be liquid gold for a small Tassie business, its unique and award-winning water and gin catching the attention of international buyers.

Geeveston water company Pure Mist is continuing to punch above its weight, with it recently opening up international exporting and taking on sponsorships at major sporting events.

The company, staffed by just seven employees, creates their award-winning water, sparkling and gin products through a unique distilling process whereby mist is collected and condensed through nets put up in the winter months.

The process creates an almost “vanilla, nutty flavour”, co-founder Jenny Carrasco said, which has earned taste awards from the global Fine Water Society.

Having developed a following in the local market and expanding to Western Australia, the company has gone international with their products available in New Zealand and in the last six months, at a series of Chinese hotels and luxury car dealerships.

Their latest product, HydraPlay, has also featured as a sponsor of Porsche Carrera Cup driver Harri Jones, and is undergoing testing to become an approved Human and Supplement Testing Australia energy and hydration product for athletes.

The exposure has been boon for Ms Carrasco, who learnt the unique production process in her home country of Chile and operates the Geeveston farm and cellar door, a former apple orchard, with Huon Valley-born husband Justin Hickey.

Ms Carrasco confirmed the company was in discussions with other prospective international buyers.

“It’s been a great opportunity for us, and with that exporting income coming in we’re able to expand and put money into Hydraplay,” she said.

“In the future we’re also looking at doing our own canning on the premises, and interviewing for more staff because it’s getting to the point where it’s too big for just us.”

The success of their products was not only due to the recent gin boom, but also Tasmania’s growing international reputation for high-quality boutique products, manager Daniel McKenzie said.

“The water down here is some of the cleanest in the world,” he said.

“The way we harvest and collect it from the air is so natural and pure.”

After renovations, their cellar door is expected to reopen to the public on April 16.
