A Labor MP says she has reported threats she has received from a “crackpot” over her party’s support for the stadium to police.
The fight between Labor and the Greens about their respective stadium policies continued in state parliament on Tuesday.
The Greens read from an April 2 email in which Labor’s Ella Haddad wrote that there were “massive issues with the stadium”.
Ms Haddad said the Greens were seeking to capitalise on an email exchange from a “crackpot” constituent she had since reported to police.
Ms Haddad read some of the correspondence in parliament on Tuesday.
The author, who claimed to be a resident of Battery Point said:
“I’m coming up to your office to have it out with you once and for all. You and Tasmanian Labor have lost all its former support in recent months. You are a pathetic lapdog, sorry, lap B...h. Your supporters cannot believe you could be so stupid on this issue. You are in opposition. For F...s sake. Get ready. We’re coming.”
Ms Haddad said she and her staff did not deserve to be the subject of abuse and threats.
“I found that email fairly shocking. I shared it with the Sergeant-at-Arms and at his suggestion, it’s now being shared with the Department of Premier and Cabinet and with police,” she said.
She described the constituent as a “crackpot” who had attempted to pass himself off as being associated with a prominent Tasmanian business.
Greens leader Rosalie Woodruff said the language of the emails were unacceptable. The Greens had been unaware of the threatening correspondence.
“That is a horrendous way to speak to anyone, let alone to speak to a member of parliament who’s doing her job representing her community,” she said.
“The Greens abhor poor language like that, and we obviously find that utterly offensive and strongly support Ms Haddad in taking any measures that she can to protect herself from that sort of behaviour.”
Labor leader Dean Winter condemned the Greens.
“After last week embarrassing herself and wasting the parliament’s time with a failed censure motion against me, Rosalie Woodruff and the Greens have decided to weaponise an email from an individual displaying abusive and misogynistic behaviour and attacking a female Labor MP,” he said.
“The abusive behaviour directed towards Ms Haddad, and other Labor MPs and staff from this individual member of the public has been longstanding and is completely unacceptable.
“It has been reported to parliament, DPAC and police.
“It is shameful that the Greens would seek to give a platform to an individual like this.”
