A probe has been launched into a suspicious house fire in Geelong West that shocked neighbours earlier this month.

Geelong CIU detectives confirmed an investigation is underway following the blaze on Trigg Street on July 10.

Witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke billowing from the rear of a property shortly before 9am, with one claiming to see a man acting suspiciously in the aftermath.

It’s understood security footage has been provided to detectives as they search for the cause.

A Victoria Police spokesman confirmed detectives are treating the incident as suspicious.

The fire was ignited in a back shed, police will allege.

An arson investigator attended the scene alongside police and staff from the City of Greater Geelong.

A spokesman from Country Fire Authority (CFA) said the structure was well alight when they arrived at 9.37am.

Four units were required from Geelong and Geelong West stations, with support also coming from Fire Rescue Victoria.

The blaze was declared under control within half an hour but the scene was unsafe for more than two hours.

No one was injured.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has CCTV/dashcam footage or information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
