Eight-time world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore is shredding it in and out of the water at the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro.
Gilmore who is through to the round of 16 at the pro surf tour contest stop in Burleigh hit the competition precinct stage with Aussie rockers Spiderbait to wow the crowds on Sunday night.
Thousands of surf fans who flooded Burleigh Heads for the first two days to see world’s best surfers stayed on to cheer Gilmore on guitar who looked to be having as good a time as anyone.
Among the crowd was Burleigh Pav owner Ben May who said he was impressed by Gilmore’s guitar performance: “She’s an extraordinary guitarist. She rocked it.”
Asked about trade over the weekend, as the world surf tour and its fans descended, he said: “I think it was the most extraordinary weekend I’ve seen at Burleigh. On the Saturday there were about 10,000 people on the hill.”
The energy from the crowd was electric, with the hill the perfect vantage point to see as much of the surfing action as possible, he said.
On Monday, the World Surfing League (WSL) announced the Gold Coast Pro’s next rounds in the water were in a holding pattern until the swell picked up again.
The next call about when it will continue will be made on Thursday, WSL deputy commissioner Renato Hickel said.
“The swell for the weekend looks great, so we are looking forward to riding some great waves here at Burleigh Heads,” Mr Hickel said.
