Thirteen excited students from St Patrick’s College are heading off for an out-of-this-world trip to iconic science attractions in the United States.

Students in Grade’s 10, 11 and 12 from the Townsville all-girls school will leave on Wednesday for their STEM Trek USA trip, which will take them to San Diego, the Kennedy Space Centre in Orlando and NASA’s Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

Grade 12 students Alicia McMillan and Charlie Pacey said they were excited for the trip and shocked by how quick their departure date came, saying that they applied to be part of the trip a year ago.

“It doesn’t feel real” Charlie said.

“I feel like it’s come around so fast, but we’ve been planning and looking forward to the trip for so long.”

Alicia said she was excited to visit the Kennedy Space Centre.

“It looks really awesome in terms of the history of space travel and being able to see all the technology they use,” she said.

“It will also be great to spend time and get closer to the other students on the trip.”

St Patrick’s College Townsville Principal Mrs Amber Hauff said the trip would push the barriers and encourage more young women to develop a passion and career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

“As the only all-girls independent Catholic day and boarding school in North Queensland, we recognise the importance of developing our future problem solvers and innovators.”

The students will take part in NASA’s Advanced Space Academy Program, which will see them take part in astronaut training activities ending with a simulated space mission.

This is the first time the trip has been offered at St Patrick’s since 2018, with the pandemic and travel restrictions meaning attempts in 2020 and 2021 were unsuccessful.
