One of the men accused of killing Bill Frangos before allegedly lighting his home on fire in an attempt to destroy the evidence is a “great, lovely, family guy” with a “good heart”, according to his brother.
Appearing in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon via video link from the cells, Yanick Masengo Nkhangu and Shekuba Kamara, both 26, made no application for release on bail.
The two have been charged with one count each of murder, arson and destroying human remains to pervert the course of justice after the body of Bill Frangos was found in a house fire last November.
Police and emergency services were called to his Essex St house just after 4am on November 7, 2024, after a passer-by noticed an “orange glow emanating from the premises”.
Firefighters entered the house and found a body inside.
Mr Frangos was said to be a “well-known member of the community” who lived alone at the property with his dog.
The prosecutor on Monday asked Magistrate Luke Davis to adjourn the matter for eight months for continuing analysis of a “number of outstanding items”.
“Although the investigation is well on its way, we are seeking time to review thousands of telephone intercept recordings which require translation due to a rare dialect spoken by the accused,” the prosecutor said.
“Analysis of mobile phone cell tower data and expert reports, CCTV tracking of suspects, DNA analysis, post mortem report and so forth.
Defence lawyer Jasmine Daniel however argued eight months was a long period of time for her client, Mr Kamara, to spend in custody.
Taylor Falting, for Mr Nkhangu, agreed.
“We are opposed to that, eight months is a very extensive period and this investigation has already been going for six months,” Ms Daniel said.
Mr Davis agreed to adjourn the matter for six months and remanded the two men in custody to face court again in October.
Speaking outside the court, Mr Nkhangu’s brother Christian said he would support his sibling with “whatever he needs”.
“We haven’t spoken much,” Christian told the media.
“He’s a lovely guy, he’s a great guy. He’s a family guy. He looks after his family.”
He said he wasn’t aware if his brother had children.
“He’s my brother, I’m here to support him for whatever he needs,” he said.
“He’s got a good heart.”
