The wife of South Australian cricket superstar Travis Head has been subjected to vile social media abuse from Indian trolls in the wake of the Aussies’ controversial Boxing Day Test victory.
Jessica Head’s latest Instagram post, showing her husband with young daughter Milla laying down on the MCG turf, was flooded with hundreds of abhorrent messages, including several pig emojis.
Many of the disgusting remarks and images – all of which are too offensive to repeat – were directed towards Ms Head and even some at her two-year-old daughter.
It’s not the first time Ms Head has been the target of Indian trolls, unhappy with the result of an Australia v India clash.
After Aussie victories in the 2023 World Test Championship Final and ODI World Cup Final, Ms Head and Milla both received online abuse from Indian fans.
“I simply ignore it. I read every comment, but I have a filter that immediately blocks the negative comments. So, I don’t even see them,” she told Sportstar at the time.
“Milla has the most beautiful personality. She is so social, so welcoming, and so loving. The trolls are people who have not been fortunate enough to meet her, because if they had, they wouldn’t be able to say bad things about her.”
When contacted on Wednesday, Ms Head told The Advertiser she had experienced “something similar” in the past, but declined to comment further.
The abuse followed Australia’s incredible yet contentious win in the Fourth Test against India, which saw a couple of lineball umpiring decisions go the home side’s way on the fifth day.
Head, who has regularly starred with the bat against India, also raised the ire of their fans with his celebration of the crucial wicket of Rishabh Pant in the final session.
The part-time Aussie off-spinner toasted the key breakthrough by dipping his spin finger in ice – a harmless celebration which captain Pat Cummins explained after stumps.
“It’s (that) his finger’s so hot he’s got to put it in a cup of ice. That’s what it is,” he said.
“That’s normally the running joke. He thinks it’s very funny.”
But former Indian international cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu didn’t see the funny side, and demanded Head be sanctioned for his actions.
“Travis Head’s obnoxious behaviour during the course of the Melbourne test doesn’t augur well for the gentleman’s game,” Sidhu wrote on X.
“(It) sets the worst possible example when there are kids, women, young and old watching the game. This caustic conduct did not insult an individual but a nation of 1.5 billion Indians.
“Stringent punishment that would serve a deterrent for the future generations needs to be slapped on him so that no one dares follow suit!!!”
More recently, Indian supporters took to the comments section of Ms Head’s Instagram post to apologise for the “abusive and disrespectful” remarks on behalf of the “majority” of fans.
“They don’t represent 95+% of us,” one person wrote.
Another wrote: “Ashamed to be an Indian. These Toxic fans’ accounts need to be blocked and reported”.
