A “large amount” of great white sharks have been spotted at a popular diving spot in the state’s south east, with SA’s peak-body for recreational fishing warning people ahead of the weekend.
RecFish SA has warned divers and people entering the water near Cape Jaffa to be aware of a group of great white sharks (GWS) spotted swimming around a popular reef.
On Thursday, the peak-body posted to their Facebook, saying commercial fishermen had raised concerns about a group of GWS swimming in an area about “8-12” metres deep, at a place known as Margaret Brock Reef.
“If you are diving this weekend in the southeast, please be aware there is currently a very large amount of great white sharks in the area in the 8-12m depth range (Margaret brock reef area),” the post read.
“RecFish SA spoke with some commercial snapper fishermen regarding ongoing snapper quota buyout arrangements, and they have also expressed concern for divers in the area over the weekend.
“RecFish SA have been provided footage to confirm as many as four great white sharks from 2-4 meters are staying in the area and interacting with long lines, two additional larger great white sharks, and a further one great white shark that died and was provided for dissection.”
It comes after regular sightings of large sharks swimming dangerously close to shore have been reported by both the public and authorities since the start of the year.
Since January 1, there have been about 170 reported sightings of sharks in SA waters.
