Car plummets off cliff at Maslin Beach

Two people have been rushed to hospital after a car was driven off a cliff and onto the beach in Adelaide’s south.

Police and emergency services were called to Gulf Parade, Maslin Beach, at 11pm on Sunday after reports a white Holden sedan had careered off the cliff and landed on the beach.

The car plummeted up to 50 metres from the top of the cliff to the sand below, according to 7News.

Nearby residents said they heard “hooning” in the area before the crash.

Trained life savers Sean Stanton and Nate Tredrea – the son of former Port Adelaide AFL player Warren Tredrea – were nearby the beach with a group of friends when they heard “a big bang”.

“Saw the car rolling down at speed half way down the hill, ended up right at the bottom,” Sean Stanton told 7News.

“It was like a movie.

“Sprinted down as fast as we could.

“It was rolling down sideways, and it wasn’t just rolling slowly, it had some pace behind it.

“The car was smoking when we got to it, so we just wanted to get him out because it didn’t smell great and we didn’t want it to explode or anything.”

Mr Stanton said the passenger in the vehicle, a 30-year-old man from Tanunda, managed to get out of the car by himself, while the pair helped the driver, a 30-year-old woman from Northgate, get out of the car.

“I ran over and pulled the door open,” Mr Tredrea added.

“We kind of like pulled the lady out, laid her down and ran up to the carpark with another guy and met the police and the ambos.”

The driver and passenger both suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were both taken to hospital for treatment.

Police say measures are being taken to remove the car from the beach.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
