South Australia is turning up the heat on US tariff threats as Trade Minister Joe Szakacs today launches a new campaign targeting “the wildly popular” Bistro chain of restaurants in China.
Mr Szakacs announced the food and wine campaign targeting China’s growing population of 500 million middle class consumers saying it would be focusing on the “culinary capitals” of Shanghai and Shenzhen.
SA beef, seafood, juice and wine would be used in 37 eateries in a bid to open new export pathways after United States President Donald Trump announced Australia would be hit with 10 per cent tariffs.
The move followed SA deploying trade experts to Canada to follow up a wine export campaign launched directly into the nation with opportunities opening up after the US also hit its neighbour with tough restrictions.
Mr Szakacs believed there was also great new opportunity for SA beef and sheep meat in China as an alternative to its key US market that has been threatened by extra tariffs.
The new China campaign would see South Australian wine and cuisine used in interactive experiences through themed tasting events, paired with some of SA’s premium food.
Mr Szakacs said it would give South Australian wine producers a new export entry point supported by the South Australian Government’s $1.85 million Wine Exporters China
Re-engagement Support Program.
This would build on wine exports to China which have continued to climb to new heights since tariffs were removed on exports to that country last year, reaching $790 million in the 12 months to February 2025.
“By partnering directly with bistros, this campaign represents a new avenue for South
Australian wine producers to reach fresh audiences in China,” Mr Szakacs said.
“The pairing of South Australian wine with premium South Australian food is a match
made in heaven and is perfectly suited to this BISTRO campaign.”
Eighteen South Australian food and wine brands are participating in the program
including Torbreck, Taylors, Yalumba, Cimicky, Rymill, Wynns of Coonawarra, Thorn
Clark, Kay Brothers, Mount Horrock, Pewsey Vale, Greenock Creek, Barossa Valley
Estate, Golden Heights, John Dovel, Kirrihill, Ashton Valley, Stehr Group and
Thomas Foods International.
