Salisbury Downs’ much-loved shopping centre, Hollywood Plaza, is set to have a multimillion-dollar makeover.
The $15m facelift will include the installation of 4000 solar panels, improved airconditioning, low energy lighting and water saving fixtures – making it one of Adelaide’s first carbon neutral shopping centres.
New entrances to the centre will feature significant paving and landscaping work, as well as a new external seating space.
For families, there will be a new children’s play area outside Jive Cafe and a variety of food and retail options for kids.
The food court is also set to undergo a major transformation with a new layout and furniture, updated fixtures and the installation of a large ceiling features within the atrium space.
The centre’s bathrooms and parents room will also be fully renewed.
Hollywood Plaza regulars were thrilled the centre would receive a Beverly Hills facelift, saying it was well overdue.
Centre employee Mary Strusi agreed centre was in need of improvements.
“The kids need something around here, there’s really nothing for them to do so a playground would be great,” she said.
Ms Strusi, who brings her six-year-old grandson Daniel with her to centre, said he was “too big” for the current playground.
The Woolworths worker said the food court is “very shabby” but said the renovation plans are “amazing”.
The 62-year-old said it was “very good news” that Hollywood Plaza would become carbon-neutral.
Friends Margaret Webb, Dawn Reed and Barbara Hore, who visit the Jive Cafe for coffee and lunch every Monday, said the plans were “an improvement”.
“It’s a big improvement – massive. It’s hard to picture really,” Ms Hore said.
Ms Webb agreed the renovations would “really brighten up the area”.
Customer Concettina Polimeni, 66, said the plans to build a new playground were “so cool”.
“It’s gives the children something to do,” she said.
The project begins immediately and will generate about 150 jobs.
LAS Group is responsible for the renovation with managing director Les Smith labelling the project a key milestone for the business.
“We know that sustainability is a major consideration when it comes to development, particularly in South Australia – this underpins our decision to make Hollywood Plaza a carbon neutral centre in 2023.”
The renovations are due for completion at the end of 2023
