SA wineries head to Hong Kong for Asia’s largest wine show VinExpo for first time since 2020 trade ban

Over 30 SA wineries will return to Hong Kong to rebuild trade ties at VinExpo for the first time since 2020.

‘Great news’: Australian winemakers ‘definitely welcome’ lift of Chinese tariffs

Representatives from over 30 SA wineries will travel to Hong Kong to participate in Asia’s largest wine show for the first time since tariffs were imposed in 2020.

36 wineries from across the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley will be on show at VinExpo in the first opportunity to meet with Chinese buyers since trade barriers were lifted last month.

19 producers will also travel to Shenzhen in mainland China to develop important relationships with buyers.

Curator Wine Co proprietor and winemaker Tom White said it was an “exciting” opportunity to meet key distributors from across Asia, all in one place.

“It is vital that producers can visit the countries on our doorstep to build strong trade relationships with key industry players and strengthen market diversity.”

Prior to the tariff, China was SA’s largest wine export market, valued at almost $1bn per year and accounted for nearly half of the state’s wine exports.

Thanks to China’s re-emergence, many wineries, including Curator Wine Co, project export growth of up to 60 per cent by the end of 2025.

Trade Minister Joe Szakacs will join the delegation and said it was important that our “world-class wineries” meet overseas buyers.

“While the recent decision by China to remove trade barriers on Australian wine is excellent news, it’s also important to diversify.

“We’ve seen wine export increases of 73 per cent with Hong Kong over the past year, so now really is the perfect time for SA wineries considering exports to explore China, Vietnam and other Asia-Pacific countries.”

The visit also marks the first trade delegation to Hong Kong by an Australian minister since before the pandemic.

VinExpo will take place between 28 and 30 May, with 10,000 trade visitors set to attend, consisting of importers, buyers, distributors, producers, sommeliers, and merchants.
