New video has been released of the South Australian Netball Centre, as the project enters a new stage and the state government seeks feedback.

Ahead of the Thunderbirds’ home grand final at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Saturday, the state government has released a fly-through video showing how the new centre will look once it’s finished.

Concept images reveal true 1970s inspiration, with the main structure featuring smooth, looping angles and a flowing, cutout entry way.

The ageing, leaky Netball SA Stadium at Mile End will be demolished and replaced by new multi-sport facility.

Announced earlier this year, the project includes $80m to build a new and improved indoor sports complex to provide the Thunderbirds with vastly superior training facilities and become a home for SA’s State Premier League.

It also includes a $12m redevelopment of the outdoor community courts, with improved lighting, shelters, playing surfaces and 26 upgraded outdoor courts.

More indoor courts, new change rooms, improved food and drink facilities and more water stations are part of the plans.

The existing Mile End stadium has a leaking roof, dodgy airconditioning and power failures that have forced the cancellation of games.

Construction on the new stadium is expected to begin next year, with the new facility to open its doors in 2028.

The state government wants to know what netball fans think of the two stages and can provide feedback on the project at Saturday’s grand final.

The Adelaide Thunderbirds will defend their Suncorp Super Netball Premiership with a home Grand Final after celebrating a record season at the Entertainment Centre.

It reached an agreement to lock in the Entertainment Centre to be the Thunderbirds’ permanent home last year.

The state government said the Thunderbirds’ move to the AEC had seen more than 56,000 people at their seven home games, a massive 115 per cent increase on 2023.

The Thunderbirds saw their largest ever crowd in the Round 14 season finale against the Lightning, with 9248 people watching the Adelaide side lock in top spot on the ladder.

Netball SA CEO Bronwyn Klei 2024 had been a monumental year for netball in South Australia.

“The team made history on court with record margins and highest scores and were undefeated at our new home,” she said.

“As reigning premiers, our Thunderbirds and Pink Army will now experience a home Grand Final thanks to the state government who secured the rights to the match last year.

“We have no doubt South Australia will embrace this opportunity to have the world’s best netball competition and one of the nation’s biggest sporting events right here in Adelaide.

“Furthermore, plans are underway for the major $92 million redevelopment of Netball SA Stadium, and we look forward to working with the government and our community to develop a world-class facility for future generations.”

Premier Peter Malinauskas said moving all Thunderbird games to the AEC had ended with a huge increases in attendance and memberships.

“Netball is one of the state’s most popular physical activities, with more than 35,000 people regularly participating – and we’re determined to deliver grassroots facilities that are fit for purpose, which is exactly what will happen with our major investment at Mile End,” he said.
