Rising footy star Byron Pickett Jnr kicks massive 20 goals in local league Indigenous Round

The son of a former AFL premiership player has revealed dreams of following in his dad’s footsteps after kicking a whopping 20 goals in a regional footy match.

The son of an AFL great has dazzled a local football league, kicking an incredible 20 goals and breaking a 40 year record.

Byron Pickett Jnr, 20, son of former North Melbourne and Port Adelaide premiership player Byron Pickett, kicked the massive haul in Saturday’s Western United Football Club game against Thevenard Football Club on the Eyre Peninsula.

Pickett Jnr’s dad also started his footy career on the Eyre Peninsula, moving to Port Lincoln at a young age and joining up with the Mallee Park football team. His talent later earned him a spot on Port Adelaide’s SANFL junior side.

Saturday’s Indigenous Round for the Western Eyre Football League saw the AFL great’s son at the heart of not one, but two records, one for his club, the other for the league.

Pickett Jnr snuck past a 40-year record previously set by Mark Threadgold who in the late 1980s kicked 19 goals.

The massive 267 point win for Western United against Thevenard was also the club’s 41st consecutive win, beating their opponents not only on Saturday, but also breaking a record set in 1971 of 40 consecutive wins, held by Thevenard since.

After kicking the massive 20 goals, Pickett Jnr told The Advertiser he was pleased to be “a part of history” while also “playing footy with my mates”.

He said while his dad couldn’t watch the game, he was still pleased by his son’s performance.

Pickett Jnr said, like his father, he hoped to one day play for the AFL too, and that he’d be more than happy to play for North Melbourne, where Pickett Snr played 120 games.

“That was one of my hopes and dreams, to one day play in the AFL and I reckon I might give that another crack,” he said.

“Every boy’s dream is to follow in your dad’s footsteps and play for the club that your dad played so many games at. I would love to play for North Melbourne.”

Despite kicking 20 goals himself, Pickett Jnr said Saturday’s big win and his own performance was “a real credit to the whole team” – “but particularly the midfield, they give me more goals”.

“I don’t think something like that will come back very often,” he said.

“But at the end of the day I’m just enjoying playing footy with my mates.”

Pickett Jnr celebrated the achievement on social media, saying it was a “special round to be a part of”, and “#historymade”.
