Properties of parliament: Register of interests reveals how many properties are owned SA MPs

South Australian Lower House MPs have collectively declared dozens of properties on the latest parliamentary register.
Each year, members of parliament are required to list their “interests in land” on the register.
And while South Australians continue to feel the cost-of-living crunch, some elected representatives have amassed impressive property portfolios.
The Advertiser’s list of top property holders includes all MPs that have declared three or more properties while those who declared two appear on the map.
The MPs who have listed interests in two properties – in most cases a main residence and an investment property or holiday home – are Zoe Bettison, Geoff Brock, Susan Close, Nat Cook, Fraser Ellis, Peter Malinauskas, Andrea Michaels, Stephen Mullighan, Lee Odenwalder, Chris Picton, Penny Pratt, Jayne Stinson, Joe Szakacs and Tim Whetstone.
John Fulbrook and Dan Cregan had each declared more than two properties at the time the register was tabled, but subsequent sales have dropped their respective portfolios to two.
These are the SA politicians with the largest property portfolios.
David Speirs – 14 properties
State parliament’s most prominent landholder, Liberal leader David Speirs, has added another property to his portfolio – this year declaring 14 homes.
Mr Speirs owns five properties at Kingston Park, as well as three in Christies Beach and one in each of the suburbs of Oaklands Park, Mitcham, Inman Valley, Brighton, Middleton and Melrose.
He also declared a share in the Marino Rocks Social Community Cooperative – a cafe and venue on the edge of the Marino Rocks foreshore
Stephen Patterson — 5 properties
Morphett MP Stephen Patterson has declared one property at Glenelg South, in his beachside electorate of Morphett.
He has two other properties at Adelaide, one at Elizabeth Downs and one at Elizabeth Park – making for a total five titles to his name.
David Basham — 4 properties
Mr Basham, who represents the Fleurieu Peninsula seat of Finniss, has declared interests in four properties.
One is at Victor Harbor, another at Port Elliot and the other two are in the Adelaide suburbs of Parkside and Unley Park.
Nick McBride — 4 properties plus a share in family company that owns agricultural land
Mr McBride, independent MP for the South East seat of MacKillop, has interests in four properties.
As well as his Conmurra property 40km outside Kingston, he has declared property in Robe, Naracoorte and the Adelaide suburb of Beulah Park.
Mr McBride also has a share, which is he says is “a very small per cent”, in a family enterprise AJ & PA McBride. He is chairman of the company, which controls 1.4m hectares of land in South Australia and Victoria.
Vincent Tarzia — 4 properties
Mr Tarzia – the opposition’s spokesman for transport and infrastructure, sport, recreation and racing, and road safety – has four properties to his name.
They are located at Magill, Campbelltown, Adelaide and Normanville.
John Gardner – 3 properties
Mr Gardner, the opposition spokesman for education, has listed three properties.
One is at Athelstone, in his electorate of Morialta, while the others are at Normanville and Prospect.
Eddie Hughes – 3 properties
Mr Hughes, whose electorate spans vast parts of regional SA, has declared three properties.
Two are in his home city of Whyalla, and a third is in the Adelaide suburb of Ethelton.
Tom Koutsantonis – 3 properties
Veteran MP Mr Koutsantonis, the member for West Torrens, has declared he owns three properties.
Two are in his electorate, at Cowandilla and Torrensville, while the third is at West Croydon.
David Pisoni – 3 properties
Mr Pisoni, the member for the inner southern seat of Unley, has declared he owns three properties.
They are at Hyde Park, which is in his electorate, as well as the Adelaide CBD and a unit at beachside Glenelg.
Dana Wortley – 3 properties
Ms Wortley, member for the north-east electorate of Torrens, declared a property at Prospect and another at Kingscote.
She also declared that her partner, Upper House MP Russell Wortley, has a share in a property at Salisbury.
