Historic buildings at an old Adelaide Hills gold and copper mine would be transformed into a stunning short-stay tourist accommodation under a new plan.

The project would completely remodify the former Grunthal gold mine buildings on Beaumont Rd at Verdun, creating a three-bedroom cabin.

Plans lodged by the private owner revealed the three rundown spaces that comprise the existing heritage buildings would be revamped into a house.

A huge steel frame door would lead into an open-plan living area – formerly the boiler house room – with a dining room, kitchen, and ceiling windows to bring in natural sunlight.

A new arched walkway and staircase would lead into the former engine room, where two bedrooms – divided by a wall – will be built on the left, with a spacious bathroom on the right.

The old rock-crusher room will be attached via a glass walkway that connects to a lavish master ensuite bedroom – fitted with a walk-in closet, bath, shower, toilet and underfloor heating.

The heritage stone walls will remain, while the compacted dirt floor will be revamped with a new slab.

Some of the walls at risk of collapsing will also be repaired.

Once the renovations are completed, up to six guests can book the new home for about three days and two nights.

The site was a former gold and copper mine and processing plant that closed more than 80 years ago, after operating on and off between 1882 to 1935.

The site was then used for agricultural activities including orchards after it closed.
