The Norwood Football Club has been left “devastated” after the sudden death of a young premiership star.

In a statement on Friday, the club confirmed the passing of 2022 premiership player Nick Lowden on Thursday.

Lowden, 23, made his SANFL debut at Norwood Oval in Round 8 last season and played 22 League games for the Redlegs across 2022 and 2023, including last year’s premiership win.

He was recruited by Norwood from the Casey Demons in the Victorian Football Club.

He previously played for the Darwin Buffaloes in the NTFL and junior football for the Gippsland Power in Victoria.

The club said he had “performed solidly” before a calf injury in Round 9.

“The club is devastated by his passing, and is thinking of his family, the playing group, coaches, and the wider Norwood Football Club community at this difficult time,” the club’s statement said.

The club described ‘Lowds’ as a “powerful, strong player around the contest” and said he “made an impact on the field ensuring that his presence was felt particularly by opposition players”.

The club said Lowden played a variety of key roles for the club, “but few more impactful and memorable than his role in the victorious 2022 SANFL Grand Final”.

“Nick will be remembered by all of his teammates along with the coaches, volunteers, support and administration staff of the Norwood Football Club. We all send our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones,” the statement said.

In a statement, the SANFL said it was “incredibly saddened by the tragic and unexpected death of Norwood Football Club player Nick Lowden”.

“The midfielder’s valuable contribution to Norwood Football Club and the SANFL men’s League in his short time playing in South Australia will always be remembered.

“We send our heartfelt condolences and offer comfort and support to Nick’s family and friends, the players, coaches and staff of the Norwood Football Club and the extended football community at this difficult time.”
