'Largest wooden beam in Australia' arrives for aquatic centre

Adelaide Aquatic Centre is on track to open this summer with up to 300 jobs on offer with Infrastructure Minister Tom Koutsantonis on Tuesday announcing its new operator.

YMCA Aquatic will take control of the new $135m North Adelaide centre that is under construction, which Mr Koutsantonis said incorporated the largest wooden beam in the country weighing more than 10,000kg.

Work on the new centre is cracking along, with the entry building taking shape and work on the pools progressing well,” he said.

“The site now really gives us a great idea of how it’s all going to look, so I can’t wait to see it all come together over the months ahead.”

Another 2,800m3 of concrete has been poured for its new 25m, eight-lane pool and lagoon outdoors.

Work is also well under way for the indoor leisure pool, and in coming months the buildings will be enclosed, ceilings and internal fittings fitted, and around 160,000 tiles installed in the leisure pool and 153,000 tiles in the remaining pools.

Mr Koutsantonis said staff who worked at the old centre demolished on the parklands site would get first shot in applying for the new jobs, and construction work had supported another 1500 more.

YMCA Aquatic has been running the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre at Oaklands Park that opened in 2011.

Recreation, Sport and Racing Minister Emily Bourke said YMCA Aquatic had a strong management record and was looking forward to welcoming the public through its doors.

When finished the new centre will have:

• A 50m, 10-lane indoor pool for swimming carnivals, water sports and recreational use

• A 25m, eight-lane outdoor pool

• A dedicated indoor warm water rehabilitation pool

• A dedicated indoor learn to swim pool

• A lagoon outdoor pool

• Entry level diving platforms

• Indoor leisure space, with splash zones and water slides

• Spa, sauna and steam room

• An outdoor splash pad with waterplay

• An outdoor aquatic zone with BBQs and lawned areas

• A cafe available for aquatic centre and parklands users

• Gym and fitness facilities
