Mythbusters: Do cars really travel back in time on the Northern Expressway? Sean Craig Murphy says he has proof one does

Whoa, this is heavy ... why does time reverse in this Nissan X-Trail as it heads down a busy Australian expressway? We tested it ourselves.

Testing Sean Craig Murphy's everyday conspiracy theory

A popular radio figure has sent conspiracy theorists into a frenzy after his girlfriend’s vehicle seemingly travelled back in time while driving along the Northern Expressway.

SAFM announcer and podcast host Sean Craig Murphy filmed the phenomenon from the passenger side of his partner Samantha Foreman’s 2019 Nissan X-Trail, capturing the moment the clock automatically jumped back 2.5 hours as it neared the Port Adelaide/Outer Harbor exit.

Mr Murphy told The Advertiser it wasn’t just a once-off occurrence, saying his girlfriend had experienced it “about 15 or 20 times”.

“She told me about it a few weeks ago – and we do this podcast called Everyday Conspiracy Theories – and she said ‘I’ve got one for you’,” he said. “She told me about it and I sort of semi believed her so I decided I’d jump in the car and either prove her wrong or prove her right.

“It’s absolutely bizarre. She drives down the Northern Expressway and about 500m before the expressway, you’ll look at the digital clock on the display in front of you and it’ll click over and then 30 seconds later it clicks back to the exact time again.

“I thought Sam might have been a slight wacko but now everyone thinks I’m a wacko.

“There’s no digital altering of that video, it’s just so bizarre that I can’t honestly come up with a reason why it happens.”

After uploading the video to various different social media platforms, Mr Murphy said many people had responded with their own “completely wiped-out theories”.

From the threat of an imminent alien invasion, to Samantha’s car acting as a portal between multiverses, those donning tinfoil hats have gone into a Facebook meltdown.

One person theorised there was a “digital shadow between relay stations”, causing the clock in the car to revert back to the manual setting it had previously been set to – in this case, Western Australia.

“I’d love to find out from Nissan if there’s an issue with that model car like a bug in the time system or something,” Mr Murphy said.

“I think some people talked about time delays and shadows, but I don’t know. On a technical front, I’m a bit of a nufty when it comes to that stuff.

“My favourite one is the fact that Adelaide’s nickname for some people in Victoria is ‘A-Delayed’, so I’m wondering if it’s some elaborate practical joke where they’ve lured us into this time continuum thing.

“It must have something to do with the signage – both the signage being created or set to Western Australian time – but why doesn’t it affect any other car? And why is it only the 2019 Nissan X-Trail? I have absolutely no idea.”
