SA Health has urged northern suburbs residents to be alert for symptoms of measles after a baby boy tested positive for the disease.
The boy, aged one, is the third case of measles in the state this year, compared with one at the same time last year.
An SA Health statement said measles was a highly contagious and serious infection which could be associated with complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis.
“Symptoms of measles start with fever, cough, runny nose, and sore eyes, followed by a blotchy rash which usually begins on the head and then spreads down the body,” the statement said.
“When measles is suspected, it is very important that people phone their doctor before any visit and mention why they are attending, so precautions can be taken to avoid spreading disease to others.”
SA Health urged anyone who wasn’t fully immunised to be alert for symptoms, especially if they were in the locations at the times listed below:
