A rural pub in a tourist hotspot is offering up a unique opportunity for a person or couple to move to remote South Australia and work in one of the most iconic locations in the state.

The Marree Hotel, located about 589km north of Adelaide, is hiring a hotel manager for the 2024 season and beyond, with the new employee at the “well-known iconic outback pub” promised an attractive salary, with accommodation and meals provided.

“We have a Hotel Management role available for our upcoming 2024 season and beyond, in our well-known iconic outback pub perfectly located close to Lake Eyre and at the junction of the Oodnadatta & Birdsville Tracks,” the venue posted on social media.

“The Marree Hotel consists of a bar, gaming, 4 dining rooms, 28 ensuite cabins, 5 single cabins, 12 hotel rooms and a swimming pool. We also provide free customer camping.”

The pub said the new hire will be responsible for overseeing the bar, gaming, accommodation and housekeeping in the venue, and manage staff and rostering.

They also noted there would be an “attractive salary, with accommodation and meals provided.”

Marree is known for its proximity to Lake Eyre, and the Marree Man.

Publican Phil van Wegen told The Advertiser the perfect candidate for the job is “someone passionate about the outback with a good amount of customer service experience.”

“We want someone that’s got a good, friendly and outgoing vibe. Someone that cares about tourism in the area who can also get along with and look after the locals.

“It’s more than just serving cold beers behind the bar – it’s maintaining the pub, making sure everything runs smoothly and overseeing the rest of the staff.”

Mr van Wegen, who took over the pub in October of 2021, said the venue has plenty of bookings well into 2025.

“This is the kinda of pub that’s always gonna go,” he said.

“If you have experience, a passion for the outback, tourism & hospitality, then send your resume to mvanwegen@westvic.com.au

“Singles or couples are welcome to apply.”

Marree lies at the junction of the Oodnadatta and Birdville tracks and also home to the Marree Man, a modern geoglyph discovered in 1998 depicting a man hunting with a boomerang or stick.
