A drug dealer who was caught with a significant amount of cash has been hit with a hefty jail term after he blew his chance to turn his life around.

Luke David Boon, 31, was jailed for seven years after he continued dealing drugs only a month into a sentence for similar offending.

During sentencing, the District Court heard police searched Boon’s Port Wakefield home on November 2, 2022.

They found $16,795, multiple mobile phones, scales, and small quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine.

Boon’s phone was analysed and police found he had sold a quarter ounce of methamphetamine for $1900 in August 2022, just a month after he was sentenced to home detention for earlier drug trafficking offending.

In another incident on October 28, 2022, Boon sold two eight-balls of methamphetamine and arranged for the drugs to be transported to Kadina by a third person.

The court heard the offending wasn’t isolated, with evidence of regular deposits to Boon’s bank account of $1000 and $2000 amounts in the first half of 2022.

“The quantities of cash located at your premises gives some insight into the kind of profit you were generating from selling drugs,” Judge Emily Telfer said.

Boon pleaded guilty to two counts of drug trafficking.

The court heard Boon was sentenced to home detention for drug trafficking and money laundering in 2022, relating to 32g of methamphetamine and $8750.

“The judge who sentenced you at that time was told that you were abstinent from methamphetamine and you had significant commitments providing care to your children,” Judge Telfer said.

The court heard Boon began using drugs and began to associate with members of outlaw motorcycle gangs in his teenage years.

The court heard Boon has six children, two with significant health challenges.

“You say you are prepared to the work to overcome the drug habit that has got in the way of being the father that you want to to them,” Judge Telfer said.

After revoking the home detention order, Boon was sentenced to seven years jail, with a non-parole period of four years and six months.

“Methamphetamine is a dangerous and addictive drug that destroys people’s lives, and you know that better than anyone,” Judge Telfer said.

“Home detention conditions did not deter you.”

The sentence was backdated to November 20, last year.
