Kylie-Anne Taylor tested positive to meth after crashing car with 5yo son inside at Ascot Park

A mum on meth was driving her young son while dancing when she careered into a car and fence, a court has heard – and was on her L-plates.

A mother who tested positive for meth after crashing her car into a parked vehicle and a fence while her young son was inside blames the collision on momentary inattention, a court has heard.

Kylie-Anne Taylor was sentenced for last June’s crash at Ascot Park at the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday by Magistrate John Clover.

Defence for the 29-year-old told the court that music was playing in the car and the Black Forest mum was dancing with her son while going down a narrow street with cars parked on each side when she collided with a vehicle on the side of the road and then an adjacent fence.

Her lawyer said the child was taken to hospital but did not suffer any significant injuries.

“Needless to say, this was a mortifying experience for Ms Taylor as a mother to obviously have, as a result of her actions, her child conveyed to hospital,” he said.

“This has been, and pardon the pun, quite a sobering experience for Ms Taylor, given the way it affected her (son) who was only five.”

Prosecution said police were called to the scene just after 3pm on June 20, 2024, following which Taylor returned a positive drug test that later showed “methylamphetamine fluid”.

Furthermore, he said Taylor, who was on a learner’s permit, did not display L-plates on her car and was the only adult in the vehicle.

Taylor pleaded guilty to driving with methamphetamine with a child under 16 present, contravening of a condition of a learner’s licence, failing to display L plates and basic due care.

Defence for Taylor said the meth in her system was “unfortunately the remnants of a previous use the previous day”.

“She was driving her son … because unfortunately he was due at an engagement and the other arrangements that had been made for him to be taken there had fallen through,” he said.

“In all the circumstances, Ms Taylor is thoroughly embarrassed and ashamed by her actions and the danger that she placed her young son in.”

Following the crash, Taylor was disqualified from driving for three months and incurred a $10,000 bill for damage to the parked vehicle and fence as well as $2000 in repairs for her own car, defence said.

Defence said she has previously engaged with drug and alcohol rehabilitation and was on a waitlist to start further rehab.

In sentencing Taylor, Magistrate Clover said he was “somewhat sceptical about how the dancing contributed to the second collision, but in any event it occurred due to inattention on your behalf”.

He fined Taylor $1400, a victim-of-crime levy and disqualified her from driving for a further four months.

He warned if she drove while disqualified she would face “almost certain” jail time.
