Kane Isaac Olsen granted detention bail, charged with drug trafficking

A man suspected of running a psychedelic drug lab and allegedly caught in the middle of a drug deal has been released.

A man suspected of running a drug lab who claimed the material police found was simply only to grow vegetables has been freed from custody.

Kane Isaac Olsen, 25, was granted home detention bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday after he was allegedly caught in the middle of a drug deal.

Earlier this month, a prosecutor told the court Mr Olsen was on bail for another trafficking charge at the time of the new charges.

The court heard police searched a Para Vista house on October 24 and found 10g of methamphetamine, some weapons and other drug paraphernalia.

The prosecutor told the court police then attended a Paralowie address on December 11 on information that DMT – a psychedelic drug – was being manufactured there.

Mr Olsen was present at the residence with his partner, two young children and two males, the court heard.

The court also heard police located approximately 10g of methamphetamine in the bedroom and a suspected DMT laboratory in the laundry.

“He told police that one of the males was present there to purchase from him and he was weighing the drugs for purchase when police arrived,” the prosecutor said.

Mr Olsen is charged with manufacturing a controlled drug and drug trafficking.

Adam Richards, for Mr Olsen, told the court his client would be pleading not guilty to the first set of allegations as his partner had taken responsibility for the items and he understood she would be charged as a result.

The court heard items which police thought were indicative of drug trafficking, including a pair of overalls and a respirator, were actually to be used for spray-painting.

“The evidence of the (drug) manufacture I think involved a large pot which had water and dirt,” Mr Richards said.

Mr Richards said the pot belonged to a friend of Mr Olsen’s that had left it there and had been used to grow tomatoes and other vegetables.

He said Mr Olsen was the one buying methamphetamine from one of the men at the address when police arrived.

“The other man present … was allowed basically to leave, my client was left carrying the can as it were,” he said.

Mr Richards said if released on bail Mr Olsen would reside with a man who had stage four cancer to be his carer.

On Wednesday, a prosecutor told the court they were no longer opposed to bail, which was granted by Magistrate Justin Wickens.

He warned Mr Olsen that home detention was a bail of last resort and if he breached the conditions he would be returned to custody.

The charges were adjourned until March.
