In a big win for a “little team”, Nova 919’s Andrew Hayes has taken home a coveted gong at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards.
Hayes, who co-presents the breakfast show with Jodie Oddy, has been named Best New Talent On Air – Radio (Metro).
The Jodie & Hayesy Breakfast Show finished fourth in its timeslot in the most recent radio ratings, behind Triple M’s Roo, Ditts & Loz, ABC Adelaide’s Sonya Feldhoff and Julian Schiller and FIVEAA’s David Penberthy and Will Goodings.
“It was a great night, I was very much just happy to be there but to get a win was pretty mind blowing,” Hayes told The Advertiser about his ACRA win.
He also gave a shout out to his colleagues, including his mentor Oddy – who last month got back from a Bali holiday only to discover she had shingles.
“I couldn’t be prouder of our little team,” Hayes said, adding: “While I was lucky enough to get the chocolates, they’re the ones that make me look good, especially Jodie who has been so good to me.”
While Hayes won the award for being a radio newbie, he wasn’t exactly inexperienced when he joined Nova a couple of years ago. He had form in the world of media: The four-time SANFL Central Districts premiership player was already a sports reporter for Channel 7 news and a reporter for its SA Weekender lifestyle program.
But you only need to be a fresh voice in the commercial radio game to win the Best New Talent On Air category, as illustrated in 2019 when SAFM’s Rebecca Morse took home the award. This was despite her having extensive experience in broadcast – including time with the ABC, where she worked in TV and radio.
In this year’s ACRAs, Nova 919 also won Best Station Produced Commercial – Campaign (Metro) for its Unique Homestyle Foods ads created by Darren Russell and Eddie Bye.
The Adelaide Direct Sales Team also won Sales Team Of The Year (National).
And proving Adelaide’s a great radio training ground, Ben Harvey, Liam Stapleton and Belle Jackson – who all got their start here but are now based in Melbourne – won the Best Comedy Segment (Metro) award for their Aussie We Didn’t Start The Fire.
There are two radio ratings results left for the year.
They are scheduled for November 14 and December 17.
