Jockey Ivy Lam in critical condition after fall at a Gawler racecourse on Monday afternoon

A 20-year-old woman has been rushed to hospital in critical condition after a horrific fall at a racecourse in Adelaide’s north on Monday afternoon.

A young female jockey is fighting for her life after a horrific racing accident at a racecourse in Adelaide’s north on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the Gawler Racecourse on Barnet Rd, Gawler just after 5pm, after reports that a woman had fallen off a horse.

The 20-year-old apprentice jockey, Ivy Lam, sustained serious head injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

A spokeswoman for SA Ambulance said she is in a critical condition.

Around 4.45pm, Ms Lam was participating in a race and had been riding a horse named Jacobs Gate in lane seven, held at the Gawler and Barossa Jockey Club.

In footage obtained by 9News, her horse appeared to withdraw back and began to fall forward, causing Ms Lam to also lose her grip and fall.

Race Caller Terry McAuliffe said her mother was watching from the crowd as the incident unfolded.

“Our thoughts are with Ivy and we’re hoping for a good result there in Gawler,” Mr McAuliffe told 9News.
