Glenelg residents have successfully secured a broader dry zone which now takes in the main thoroughfare of Jetty Rd.
Hefty penalties of up to $1250 or $160 on-the-spot fines can now be handed to anyone found with alcohol in the broadened dry zone as the government cracks down on anti-social behaviour.
The new measures, first sent to public consultation more than a year ago, come in response to extensive feedback from local Glenelg residents who say they felt unsafe because of people drinking in the street.
The move was initially triggered by a request from SA Police forced to deal with the anti-social behaviour in the area.
Jetty Rd is typically a designated dry zone around New Year’s Eve but it will now be a permanent no-booze area.
Consumer and Business Affairs Minister Andrea Michaels said the dry zone came into effect on October 31.
“The Glenelg Dry Zone has been extended down Jetty Road to address anti-social behaviour being experienced in the area,” she said.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community and we have heard the feedback from local residents and traders that they would like this area to be a dry zone year-round.”
More than 85 per cent of local residents and traders supported the decision.
A local church volunteer, in their feedback to the consultation, said they were forced to clean up bottles and mess left behind by people drinking in the area.
Another person said “no one should be subjected to public drunkenness, bad language and yelling”.
A dry zone designation can allow police to have the power to confiscate liquor being consumed outside of a licenced venue.
The expansion means the dry zone now covers Jetty Rd to the tram stop east of Brighton Rd and surrounding areas bounded by Augusta St South to High St.
The Holdfast Bay council area has three long-term regulated dry areas in operation at Glenelg, Brighton and Seacliff.
