Flights between Adelaide and Bali have been cancelled, leaving holiday-makers scrambling as a massive volcano spews ash into the sky in eastern Indonesia.

On Wednesday, Jetstar cancelled multiple services between Adelaide and Denpasar, just hours after Mt Lewotobi Laki-Laki – a 1584-metre-high twin-peaked volcano on the tourist island of Flores – erupted at 5.35pm local time on Tuesday.

The height of the eruption column is believed to be approximately 10,000 metres above the summit, according to Indonesia’s volcanology agency.

Geology agency head Muhammad Wafid said tourists should avoid carrying out any activities within at least 7km of the volcano’s crater, also urging people in the area to wear face masks to protect themselves from volcanic ash.

Mt Lewotobi Laki-Laki previously erupted multiple times in November, killing nine people and forcing thousands to evacuate, as well as leading to the cancellation of many international flights to Bali.

Flights from other Australian capital cities to Bali have also been affected, with multiple airlines cancelling services.
