A teenager stabbed a man in a jealous rage, causing his intestines to protrude, after seeing him in bed with his girlfriend.
Ian Michael Lovegrove, 20, awaits his fate from custody after shocking CCTV footage showed the victim staggering door to door for help.
During the trial, the District Court heard Tyson Wanganeen was out in Hindley Street in November 2022 when he met Asha Briscoe and her two friends.
He and another man were invited back to a house for the party with the three women and they travelled to Ms Briscoe’s unit in Blyth Street, Parkside.
The court heard Lovegrove, who was 18 at the time, came through the window the morning after and saw his girlfriend, Ms Briscoe, lying on a bed with Mr Wanganeen.
Lovegrove, who was “motivated by jealously” then attacked him with a knife.
The court heard Mr Wanganeen suffered an abdominal stab wound travelling upwards across the diaphragm and into his chest.
CCTV footage shows Mr Wanganeen clutching his stomach and staggering door to door at Parkside looking for help.
Prosecutor Rowan Gulliver told the court this week that Mr Wanganeen arrived at the Royal Adelaide Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A surgeon who examined Mr Wanganeen found that his intestines and stomach were protruding from the wound.
After three surgeries and a total of 28 days Mr Wanganeen was discharged.
“The offending was a serious and unprovoked violent attack upon Mr Wanganeen … the injury that Mr Wanganeen can only be described as catastrophic,” Mr Gulliver said.
“He describes living with pain at the site of the wound which persists and he has struggled to work.”
Lovegrove, of Croydon Park, pleaded guilty midway through the trial to causing serious harm with intent.
Greg Tonkin, for Lovegrove, told the court his client had been abstinent from drugs while he had been in custody for over two years.
He said Lovegrove felt ashamed for hurting a man who was once a childhood friend and asked the court to suspend any further time in custody.
“He has thought constantly about his impact on Tyson Wanganeen and it is a matter of deep regret to him,” Mr Tonkin said.
“He has good prospects for changing his life and he is a very, very young person.”
Judge Michelle Sutcliffe will sentence Lovegrove next week.
