CCTV footage shows the terrifying moment a store owner was attacked after he confronted a man allegedly stealing items from his family run business.

Gawler Hot Bread Bakery owner Ryan Nguyen, 39, said the suspect was sitting at a bench outside his Murray St store waiting for him to open.

The footage shows the suspect enter the premises around 6:50am on Saturday 15 March, taking a drink and cake from the refrigerator before walking out.

Mr Nguyen followed the man outside, confronted him and was attacked.

He was not seriously injured.

“I just came after him and ask him to give me back the stuff,” Mr Nguyen said.

“I’m not touching him and then he tried to hit me.”

Mr Nguyen alleges the suspect stole items from the store on two previous occasions, over a three week period, before the altercation took place.

“I have to stand up for my business,” Mr Nguyen said.

“I don’t want to be violent to anyone, I just want to run my business.”

Mr Nguyen said his bakery donates bread and cakes to the nearby Uniting Church, to try and help people in need.

The suspect was last seen walking south on Murray St.

He is described as being around 40 to 50-years-old, of a large build, and wearing camouflage army pants.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
