A police officer who was attacked by a thug said he had never in his decades of serving the community come across someone as violent and aggressive.

Grant John Witt, 38, begged for no jail after he unleashed the rampage on the officer who was left with unbearable pain.

In his victim impact statement read to the court by the prosecutor, the police officer of 32 years recounted the horrific assault he suffered on December 31, 2023 at Torrensville.

“In that time (32 years) I have never been assaulted in the way that this person assaulted me,” he said.

“I have dealt with numerous persons affected by alcohol and drugs but none have been as violent and aggressive as Grant Witt.”

The officer said he was punched to the back of the head by Witt and left with a dislocated left shoulder.

“At the hospital I spent 12 hours in the Emergency Department, at times the pain was so much I was on three different pain medications,” he said.

The officer said his wife, also a serving police officer, was admitted twice to hospital for possible heart issues.

“This was due to the stress of seeing me in so much pain and being able to do nothing to help me,” he said.

The officer said he was put on light duties after the assault and missed out on being an active member of his section.

Witt, of Sturt, pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including driving in a reckless or dangerous manner, driving under the influence and recklessly causing harm to a worker.

In CCTV played to the court, Witt can be heard to stop resisting as he responds aggressively.

“Get off me”, “I haven’t done anything”, “let me go”, Witt can be heard continually yelling before he is eventually handcuffed.

The prosecutor told the court the victim police officer remained motionless after the attack before he was taken to hospital on a stretcher.

Peter Hill, for Witt, told the court his client was genuinely remorseful for his offending and had now spent a significant amount of time in custody.

Mr Hill pushed for a suspended sentence, saying Witt was now drug free and was a different man to the one he was at the time of the offending

Judge Joana Fuller ordered a report and adjourned Witt’s charges until March.
