He’s the former cycling champion charged with causing the death of his wife after she was hit by a car near the front of their affluent street in one of Adelaide’s most prestigious suburbs.
But the former Tour Down Under champion Rohan Dennis and other mourners are preparing to farewell Melissa Hoskins at a public memorial on Saturday.
Mr Dennis is expected to attend with the couple’s two young children on Saturday and he has spent the week with his children and closest relatives and friends.
On Monday he returned midmorning to his Medindie home on a pushbike with his young daughter. A few hours later, the pair left home again, also on a pushbike.
On Tuesday, he left home about 8.30am in a white VW Polo and arrived home 40 minutes later. He then joined a man and a woman on a 40-minute run around Lefevre Park in North Adelaide.
Mr Dennis’s parents Brenton and Debbie visited him on Wednesday.
On Thursday, he left his home as a passenger in a white Volkswagon Passat. Photographs taken by The Advertiser reveal Mr Dennis, who still appears trim and fit, wearing his wedding ring.
He returned home later in the day accompanied by a blonde woman and carrying what appears to be a picture frame. His relationship with the woman is unknown.
Ms Hoskins’ family from Perth – parents Peter and Amanda as well as sister Jess – will fly in for Saturday’s memorial at Adelaide Town Hall, which is expected to attract hundreds of people.
Ms Hoskins was just 32 when she died after the incident in Avenel Gardens Rd, Medindie on December 30.
Detectives and Major Crash officers investigated the scene and soon arrested Mr Dennis, charging him with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and endangering life.
The Advertiser understands police will allege Ms Hoskins jumped onto the bonnet of the family’s grey 2022 Volkswagen Amarok Highline V6 ute and then grabbed at a door handle. Officers will allege Mr Dennis continued to drive the 4WD until she fell to the ground.
Detectives believe she may have been dragged some distance along the leafy street, which is located in one of the state’s most expensive suburbs in Adelaide’s inner north.
Mr Dennis, 33, is yet to enter pleas to the charges, is on bail and is scheduled to face Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 13.
He made a surprise appearance at his wife’s funeral in Perth in January, where he was believed to have entered the chapel through a separate entrance to other mourners.
Ms Hoskins’ father Peter gave the eulogy at her Perth funeral and is also expected to speak at the Adelaide service on Saturday.
The family have said they want the memorial to be a joyful celebration of the cyclist’s life and achievements, before and after cycling.
A number of Ms Hoskins’ cycling teammates, mentors and around 100 guests have been invited to attend.
The memorial is open to the public and will be livestreamed on the Cycling Australia Facebook page.
Mr Dennis and Ms Hoskins are both former Olympians and gold medallists who went from trackside sweethearts to the golden couple of the pro-cycling world.
Perth-born Ms Hoskins showed signs of being a promising sportswoman from an early age. She started competitive cycling at just 16, initially competing and largely winning gruelling endurance events.
In 2012, she headed to the London Olympics, where another rising star in the cycling world would compete.
Adelaide-born Dennis, just 22 at the time, was already a gold medallist, and had helped Australia to gold at the 2011 London World Cup.
The couple might have missed Olympic gold that year, with Dennis and his team landing silver and Hoskins’ team finishing at fourth place behind Canada, but their days spent together as Team Australia were the foundations of a relationship that would span over 12 years.
In the years that followed, the couple would travel the world competing, living in Spain and Andorra.
In May 2017, Hoskins announced the couple’s engagement as well as her retirement from competition, with the pair marrying in February 2018.
They lived in a $2.45m property in the affluent, tree-lined suburb of Medindie and enjoyed a family life focused on their two young children.
