Adelaide Oval crowds will be the first in the country to use cryptocurrency to pay for their food and drink at a major stadium.
The technology will be used for the first time at the Crows v Melbourne clash on Thursday night, which kicks off AFL’s Gather Round.
As part of the trial – a world-first on this scale – selected food and drink kiosks in the Southern Stand will accept crypto payments from Crypto.com customers without having to convert into normal dollars.
Customers simply need to select cryptocurrency as their preferred payment method at checkout, generating a QR code which is then scanned through their Crypto.com app.
There will be a $10 cashback offer on the first 1000 transactions made during Gather Round.
The pilot program will continue across this weekend at the Oval and across the full 2024 AFL season.
Crypto.com Asia Pacific general manager Karl Mohan said as a major sponsor of the Crows and the AFL, it was exciting to launch this trial during one of the biggest rounds of the year.
“The payment technology we’re introducing at Adelaide Oval is not only user-friendly for both the merchant and customer but also extremely scalable and we see a lot of promise for future integrations like this,” he said.
Crows chief executive Tim Silvers said Crypto.com, which has more than 80 million users around the world, continued to break new ground in cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
“Whether it’s membership offerings or in this case purchasing food and beverage on game day, we also want to give our supporters the opportunity to choose what best suits them,” he said.
