Dozens of people have been evacuated from an apartment building in the CBD after a fire broke out at lunchtime on Thursday.
Shocked residents could be seen on the pavement of the Waymouth St block holding pets and babies as fireys investigated.
Around five fire appliances raced to Waymouth St just after noon – though it appears the fire started in a fridge and was only minor.
Resident Marionette Sawyer said she initially heard unconfirmed reports the fire had been started by a pair of earphones which had “exploded” in the room right next to hers.
“I was woken to the pounding of my door by one of the workers and as soon as I went out you could see the water pouring out from under the door,” she said.
“You could smell the horrible fiery smell … I was terrified, I mean I have so much stuff in my room and living right next door
“I just ran down the stairs crying because I was absolutely petrified.
She said the firefighters arrived within a matter of minutes.
Around the same time another fire broke out in the CBD, on West Tce, behind the Subaru dealership. Details are still sketchy but it appears to be only minor.
It comes after a busy night for fireys, with a shed fire on the Coorong and a house fire at Parafield Gardens.
Just before 9pm on Wednesday, police and emergency services were called to reports of a house on fire in Kellaway St, Parafield Gardens.
Fire crews arrived to find the house engulfed in flames, resulting in about $450,000 damage. The home was completely destroyed in the blaze but there were no reports of injuries.
Police Fire Cause Investigators went to the scene.
The cause of the fire is undetermined but it is not believed to be suspicious and investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, a shed and farm equipment was destroyed in the fire at Colebatch on the Coorong, which broke out about 9.30pm on Wednesday, leaving an estimated damage bill of about $650,000.
