Exeter man appears in court after being charged over bashing at Peninsula Hotel Motel in Taperoo

A man has appeared in court for the first time charged over a punch outside a pub that put his alleged victim in hospital, fighting for his life.

A man who allegedly punched another man in the head outside a Taperoo pub - leaving him fighting for his life in hospital - will spend the next six months behind bars.

The defendant, a 29-year-old Exeter man, whose identity is suppressed, fronted Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday for the first time where he made no application for bail.

He is charged with causing serious harm over the fight, which put a 35-year-old Panorama man into hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The prosecution made the suppression application on the basis that there were “a number of witnesses” yet to be interviewed.

“Police wish to have the opportunity to interview these people and conduct identification procedures with them,” they told Magistrate Jay Pandya.

“In my respectful submissions, publication of the accused’s name and/or his image could potentially prejudice any identification made by those witnesses.”

Emergency services were called to the Peninsula Hotel Motel in Taperoo after receiving reports of a physical altercation between two men in the early hours of Saturday morning, just after midnight.

Police said the victim was punched to the head and rushed to hospital where he has serious, life-threatening injuries.

Detectives from Western District and Crime Scene Investigators attended the scene and following investigations arrested the 29-year-old Exeter man.

The matter was listed for charge determination in January.
