Major crime detectives responds to hazmat incident unfolding in Mount Gambier

A large presence of police and other emergency services, including hazmat, are currently at the scene of an incident in Mount Gambier.

Police and emergency services, including hazmat, are currently at a property in Mount Gambier, with reports of hazardous materials involved.

The Advertiser understands that there is a deceased person inside the property, with reports that Major Crime Detectives have been called to assist.

The incident happened just after 1pm on Wednesday, and emergency services crews were called to an incident on Pick Ave on the city's east side.

Upon arrival, police refrained from entering the premises and requested the Metropolitan Fire Service to attend in relation to possible hazardous smells coming from the premises.

Pick Ave remains closed as emergency services work to determine what the circumstances are.

The incident is being reported as involving hazardous materials, with SAPOL, MFS and SES crews in attendance.

The public has been asked to avoid the area if possible while the crews do their work.
