Elizabeth East man, 33, arrested by JACET and charged after allegedly uploading child abuse material

A tip-off from US child protection authorities has led to the arrest of a South Australian man accused of uploading child abuse material.

An Elizabeth East man will face court on Wednesday after allegedly possessing child abuse material after a report from the United States sparked a local investigation.

The SA Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (JACET) charged the man, 33, on Tuesday after investigating a report from the United States’ National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The report was in relation to an online user uploading child abuse material to a social media platform and investigators linked the man to the illegal online activity.

A search warrant was executed at the man’s Elizabeth East home on Tuesday where investigators allegedly found child abuse material on an electronic device.

The man was charged with one count of possessing child abuse material accessed or obtained using a carriage service and electronic devices were seized and will be subject to further forensic examination.

AFP Detective Acting Superintendent Simon Lalic said the investigation highlighted how closely police around Australia and the world worked together to combat the exploitation and abuse of children.

“The AFP and its law enforcement partners are working tirelessly to protect children and stop anyone involved in their exploitation or abuse,” he said.

“This is not a victimless crime. Children are not commodities to be used for the abhorrent gratification of sexual predators.

“Our message to online offenders has not changed – if you procure, access and transmit child abuse material, you will be found, arrested and prosecuted.”

The maximum penalty for possessing child abuse material accessed or obtained using a carriage service is 15 years’ imprisonment.

The man is expected to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Wednesday, July 30.

SA’s JACET investigators, comprise both Australian Federal Police and South Australia Police officers.
