Overseas computer hackers have taken over the Instagram account of SA lifestyle and news website Glam Adelaide – and are demanding up to $2000 for its return.
The social media account, which has about 115,000 followers, was infiltrated on Tuesday, with hackers changing the biography to say: “this Instagram account is held to be s*ld back to its owner”.
They added a phone number and also changed the account’s cover photo to a picture of Heath Ledger’s Joker character from the Batman film franchise.
Adelaide’s Kelly Noble, who founded the popular brand in 2007, confirmed the account was hacked and said it is a “devastating time” for the business.
“We’ve lost access to 10 years of work, thousands of hours, and over 21,000 posts promoting SA destinations and businesses,” she said.
“Rewarding the hackers with a nearly $2,000 ransom for committing this crime, can’t be justified. We’d rather make lemonade from these lemons, and invest that money back into our community, and support them instead.”
Noble said they will be starting a new account – @Glam.Adelaide – offering followers a free series of webinars, run by industry experts, which will focus on cyber-security safety and social media tips.
“We’re also collaborating with some great SA businesses to offer a giveaway to our Instagram community for getting behind us during such a heartbreaking time for us,” she said.
Glam Adelaide’s website, Facebook and Twitter accounts remain active.
When contacted by The Advertiser, the hackers declined to comment but confirmed they had taken over Glam Adelaide’s account.
