Construction of the Adelaide Crows’ $100m Thebarton headquarters is weeks ahead of schedule, chairman John Olsen has revealed, as fundraising expands in a bid to curb significant debt.
Unveiling images including the concrete slab for the training and administration centre, Mr Olsen told The Advertiser more than 6000 tonnes of demolition material had been recovered from the Thebarton Oval site.
Mr Olsen, who has earmarked an early 2027 opening of the new headquarters, said the Crows would be “taking on significant debt” but would “not place the club’s financial viability at risk”.
“A significant amount of progress has been made at the Thebarton site and, at this stage, the project is two to three weeks ahead of schedule,” Mr Olsen said.
“Demolition and bulk earthworks have been done and over 6000 tonnes of demolition material have been recovered from the site, including bitumen, concrete, brick, topsoil and structural soils.”
Thebarton Oval, previously the home of the now-merged West Torrens Football Club, is being realigned in the same size and configuration as Adelaide Oval.
Mr Olsen in February said the Crows’ new home was due to open in February, 2027, saying this had slipped a couple of months because of negotiations over the massive project.
He told The Advertiser on Friday the “biggest undertaking in the club’s history” was “taking shape and moving ahead” after “years and years of talk and negotiations”.
Mr Olsen said an expanded capital raising campaign was in full swing, labelling this one of the most critical elements of the entire project.
He said the club appreciated support from donors and all three tiers of government and now had a range of fundraising offerings designed to “allow as many people as possible to contribute”.
“We’ve had strong support to date and we’re thankful for those who have generously donated however, there’s still some way to go,” Mr Olsen said.
